Sweden says supports Azerbaijan’s initiative to update legal documents on co-op with EU

Baku. Malahat Najafova – APA. Sweden supports Azerbaijan’s initiative to update the package of legal documents on cooperation with the European Union, Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström said on Wednesday.

Wallström made the remarks during a joint press conference with her Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku.

She said that these documents should reflect common interests of the member countries with Azerbaijan.

The FM added that Sweden, one of the founding members of the EU, considers the Eastern Partnership program important.

She said that each country has its own positions and the attitude of one member country differs from that of other countries.

The EU is providing financial support to these countries which need to fulfill their commitments on partnership, Wallström stressed. “As a minister, I want to say that I will defend the priority of the Eastern Partnership,” she said.

In turn, Minister Mammadyarov thanked Sweden for supporting Azerbaijan’s proposals on the conclusion of a strategic partnership agreement with the EU.

Mammadyarov recalled the visa facilitation agreement signed between Azerbaijan and the EU. “We think this is not enough and want that ordinary citizens of Azerbaijan to be able to travel to the EU countries with passports,” he added.
