ANAS: Strong earthquake on Iran-Iraq border unlikely to affect Azerbaijan

The powerful earthquake on the Iranian-Iraqi border is unlikely to affect earthquake focuses in Azerbaijan, Gurban Yetirmishli, head of the Republican Seismic Survey Center of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), told APA on Monday.

He said that the first tremors were felt in Nakhcivan, Lankaran, Lerik and Yardimli – Azerbaijan’s territories bordering with Iran.

Yetirmishli noted that an earthquake measuring 3 magnitude is unlikely affect the earthquake focuses in Azerbaijan due to the distance and geological structure of the region.

He predicted that aftershocks will last for a while in Iran.

“At present, there is no activity in earthquake focuses in Azerbaijan. Small and slightly palpable earthquakes occur periodically, and this is normal,” added Yetirmishli.

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Iranian-Iraq border last night, and the epicenter of tremors was 104 kilometers from the city of Kermanshah. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Fourteen aftershocks were recorded after the powerful earthquake.

The earthquake death toll in western Iran has reached 339 people with more than 2,500 injured, while 6 people died and many were injured in Iraq.
