UNICEF may assist in rehabilitation of Azerbaijani children in Iraq and Syria

UNICEF has not received any requests from the Azerbaijani government or the concerned state bodies for the return of Azerbaijani children from Syria and Iraq, Head of the UNICEF Office in Azerbaijan Edward Carwardine said in an interview to Azerbaijan.

“However, we are paying attention to this issue,” he said.

Carwardine said he is informed of the fact that the children will be brought back to Azerbaijan in the near future, noting that he has already met with the chairpersons of the Azerbaijani State Committee for family, Women and Children affairs in this respect.

“I told the committee chairperson that we must unequivocally accept that these children are victims of conflict and have been hurt in the conflict. Once the children have been returned safely, it should be a priority to rehabilitate them and provide psychological aid to them so that they can continue with their normal lives. We can assist in these matters,” he said.

The head of UNICEF’s Azerbaijani Office continued: “I’m glad that our partners from the government agreed with the need to pay special attention to these children’s rehabilitation after their safe return. I think that we can be involved in the measures to be taken after the return of children. If there is a proposal for our involved in these measures, we will consider them and express our attitude.”
